Introducing Jess Spiers' Workstyle

WHAT'S YOUR #WORKSTYLE? HOXBY STORY SERIES

This series takes a deeper look into the unique workstyles of some of our amazing Associates here at The Hoxby Collective.

Meet Jess, she lives in Suffolk with her husband, son, and daughter. She splits her time between her kids, her freelance editorial work and catching up with family and friends.

With a one-year-old and a three-year-old to look after, a traditional working pattern just doesn’t suit me. The kids are my number one priority but I’ve realised that I also need to work for my own sanity!

Flexible working is the obvious choice and Hoxby is perfect for this. It’s just completely logical that if you can work the hours that suit you – be it mornings or the middle of the night – you’ll be happy and fulfilled, so the work you produce will be better. It sounds so obvious – so why aren’t more companies open to flexible working? I genuinely believe that the working population would be happier and healthier if the norm was to work flexibly, when it suited you.

My workstyle on an average day

Morning

I drop my kids at nursery and go to our local park where there are free exercise machines for anyone to use. I’d never set foot in a gym so this is perfect for me! Back at home, I get a couple of hours of work done while the house is quiet.

Afternoon

I pick up the kids from nursery and we spend the afternoon together. This typically involves a nap, the park, Paw Patrol and them generally running me ragged!

Evening

Once the kids are in bed, I either relax on the sofa with my husband and our latest box-set (House of Cards, Game of Thrones, West Wing, to name a few) or I get a bit more work done, depending on how tired I am and what deadlines I need to meet.

The evenings are the obvious time for me to work, but I’m usually exhausted from looking after the kids by then, so it doesn’t always suit. I know I can use the mornings to get work done though, and weekends if I need to. It’s comforting to know that I can work when it suits me. I know the work I deliver is of a higher quality as a result.

Who could ask for a better work-life balance? I’m convinced I produce my best work now that I’ve been given the chance to work when I want to. I’m so much happier and more fulfilled than when I worked 9am-5pm every day. I don’t have to sacrifice quality time with my children and I can continue to prioritise their needs, while also getting what I need.
